How long Have Garters Been Around?
Garters have been with us since the 14 Century. They have adorned women’s legs for Weddings, Prom, and Costumed events. Men even get in on the action when tending bar (or dance routines) on special occasions.
You can choose from satin, organza and lace. Many of the colors are highlighted with authentic Austrian Swarovski crystals, pearls or marabou feathers. The choices and reasons for having one of your own are endless.
Brides Dress Ripped to Shreds
When it comes to weddings, history reveals a belief; having a part of the bride’s clothing would bring good luck. Guests would destroy the brides dress by ripping off small pieces. This did not stand well with her so she began throwing other things. This was the beginning of the “Garter Toss”. Tradition was that the bride did the tossing; however, this also caused problems. Men would get drunk, impatient and try to remove it ahead of time. So a new custom was started where the grooms do the removal and tossing. Tradition also tells us that the bride wears two. One is for a keepsake and the other is tossed by the groom. Both are worn on the right leg right above the knee. Make sure the one to be tossed is at the bottom of the two. You don’t want to loose the keepsake.
He Does What With His Teeth?
Before the groom does the toss, the bride tosses a bouquet to single women guests. Then when the bride is seated, the groom removes the bride’s toss garter (sometimes with his teeth) however, more appropriately with his hands. He then tosses it to single male guests. The single male guest then places it on the leg of the single female guest that caught the bouquet. It is said they are the next to be married and sometimes to each other.
