Custom Made to Measure
Made to Measure is another name for Custom Clothing. It is constructed by each client’s personal or individual tastes. It is one of a kind dressing. A tailor, dressmaker or seamstress will determine what points of the body to consider that will create the garment you request. Once you have chosen the design for your specific garment, length, width and most points in between will be analyzed. For a skirt along with length are the most important. If there is detail on the skirt, such as pockets, pleats or design lines, they are taken in to account for proper placement. This can vary from one person to another depending on body structure. Someone who is 5’ 1” will need to have details scaled down where as a person 5’ 7” can balance out with larger details or prints. A blouse with short sleeves involves - shoulder width
- apex to apex/shoulder to apex
- high bust/full bust/below bust
- shoulder to waist/shoulder to length
- waist and hip
- sleeve length
and the list goes on. Depending on the article of clothing you have in mind, will determine the dimensions needed to construct that garment. Bridal or evening gowns include more of an analysis. The length and number of pieces can be numerous. Be prepared with the undergarments you will be wearing with your specific garment. If it is a jacket, think about what you will be wearing underneath of it. Depending where you live it could be a sweater or a camisole. These calculations are used in construction for proper fit. The Lady form below shows you different points that will be taken into account for a custom garment. These are by no means exact. Each tailor or dressmaker has their own way of getting flat fabric constructed into the garment you request. Some may drape on a body or dress form to create the design and use that model as their pattern.
