Is Hiring a Seamstress Worth Your Time and Money

Hiring a seamstress can be the best experience in a time of need. You just purchased

  • A Wedding Gown, Brides Maid or Mothers Dress
  • A New Suit for Work or Job Interview
  • Prom Gown or Fancy Dress
  • A Jacket that coordinates with your wardrobe
  • Skirt or Pants that looks great with those new shoes or boots
  • Let’s face it. Most clothes could use an alteration or two unless your figure matches the size chart a manufacture drafts from. Be aware there is a wide variation between the manufactures. A size 8 in one may be a 12 in another.

I for one am too short for almost every article of clothing I purchase. I tired of pinning up sleeves or hems to get me by. I had a couple people tell me duct tape or staples work. I was not thinking I wanted to repeat this process each time I laundered or dry cleaned. I love clothes, so I started playing around with a sewing machine. That led me to a professional job in alterations. I spent years learning how to fit the curves of the body. It is still one of my favorite interests today.

Another interest is changing the style of clothes. When clothes go out of style or have accomplished their one time wear, you can recycle them or change them into completely new garments. Think:

  • long to short on coat or sleeve hems
  • bridal gown into a christening or first communion dress
  • attendant gown to Prom with added details
  • slacks into Capri length or shorts
  • Let your imagination take over. Anyone can construct a garment. Will it fit the curves when completed? Alterations can change an alright outfit into a WOW outfit when it fits your curves.

    Why alter ONE DAY WEAR?

One time wear clothing such as a Bridal Gown, Prom, Attendant or Mothers’ dress may make you want to skip this experience. Just remember photographers catch all these things in pictures. Do you want lasting memories of an ill fitting dress every time you look at the pictures or see them displayed? What about

  • the gal who keeps pulling her strapless gown up
  • the bride who is tripping over her dress that is an inch too long
  • A lining or petticoat peeking out from under the hem
  • When searching for a seamstress, know there are many walks in this business. Alterations specialists may only work on street wear. A bridal seamstress specializes in evening wear. They may do both but check to make sure. Shortening hems, putting zippers in coats and moving seams all takes skill. Working with specialty fabrics that are used in constructing bridal gowns and evening wear is another area.

Spend time in font of a mirror. Check fit front and back. See if there needs to be any adjustments. You will have a good feeling if you like what you see. Compliments will follow you if the fit is there.

Do You Want to be Noticed More on the Job?

Whether you purchase a skirt, pair of pants, blouse or business suit, if it does not fit - your closet will wear it more than you do. Nothing will scream unprofessional louder than clothes with ill fit. Look around at the best dressed people in any office or work place. Those properly dressed hold the higher paying positions.

    Who is in Charge anyway?

You may have heard horror stories about how a garment got botched. This is where you come in. You need to take the lead in finding out whether the seamstress you are hiring is professional. Are they knowledgeable in the type of clothing and fabrics you are having altered? Ask questions, see past projects (most professional seamstress have photos of their work) or get recommendations. Find out from family or friends where they receive their fine fit. By hiring some one you know nothing about, you risk time and money. If alterations go wrong

  • you pay twice to have it corrected
  • headaches suddenly appear
  • your precious time disintegrates

  • Where can you find a seamstress?
